Essay

CREATIVE COMMUNICATION IN MULTIMEDIA UNIVERSITY

Communication is the process of conveying an input which is a message or information is being transferred from sender to recipient. For example in MMU a lecturer (sender) is conveying messages to the students (receiver) through method of teaching student in class. The students would then reply (feedback) to the lecturer by applying and comprehending what has been taught in class. There are two types of nonverbal communication that consists - body language and gestures. For example, sometimes MMU students indicates their feeling bored and as end result, they would show some common gesture such as yawning, tapping pencil on the table, or showing unnecessary movement in class to show that they indirectly wanting the lecturer finish the class early.

The word aesthetic brings the definition of the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature and expression of beauty, as in the fine arts. For example, when we want to show that we like someone we can express the feeling through singing or poetry and such. Apart from that, paralanguage also is communication that goes beyond the specific spoken words. It includes pitch, amplitude, rate, and voice quality of speech. Paralanguage reminds us that people convey their feelings not only in what they say, but also in how they say it. For example for black peoples we can differentiate them through their slang because we understand their culture of they speak and sound.

There are many things that we can relate in communication is either directly or indirectly. To be creative, we MMU student think that object also can be related into communication for instance pen flower and camera. Why pen? It is because in our life, we indeed using pen to write and draw. Pens are much closed to the students which they use pen everyday to write. When we were small we have been sent off to school to learn a word. Through the word it helps us to read and write so that we easily communicate with people around us. Sometimes they write a letter to express the feeling such as love letter because many people maybe too shy to tell someone how they feel or does not how to relay these emotions. By using the letter they can express feeling without uttering words. Other example is during World War II, Japanese troops invaded Malaya. Malaya people used the radio to communicate but unfortunately it has been confiscated and keeps by Japan soldiers. Therefore it obviously show us how important newspaper writing during that time because there is only way to communicate and get to know the information through the newspaper writing. From the newspaper writing its cultivate Malaysian spirit to independence because with their press they can communicate and unite to resist colonist.

Drawing is a natural mode of communication for example young children they rarely resist and that offers a way to express feelings. That it’s a good way to express ourselves without words. Words have a strong impact, and we have been able to see for ourselves that a drawing can have just as much of an impact as words. Just like words, it's how you say it sometimes that gets peoples attention. That is what some people get excited when they draw something to express feeling. Besides that, have you ever wondered what were some of the things that ancient civilizations did to communicate before there were televisions, telephones, cell phones and pagers. During the ancient civilizations they communicate by drawing the symbols to express something mostly was found in cave. They wanted to show to the future generation what has happened for the past year back.

Flower also can help us to communicate in creative way because sometimes flower brought a symbolic meaning, for example red roses are given symbol of love, beauty and passion. Poppies are a symbol of consolation in time of death. In UK, New Zealand, Australia and Canada, red poppies are worn to commemorate soldiers who have died in times or war. Lilies also use for burials as a symbol referring to “resurrection/life”. It is also associated with stars (sun) and its petals blooming/shinning. Some people believed that daisies are a symbol of innocence. In Multimedia University a bouquet of flowers are been giving in graduation ceremony to congrats their beloved children and friends.

Can you imagine camera also can help people to communicate? Why camera? Camera is a method to capturing image. So with variety image people also can express their feeling through picture. Image also helps student to memorize what they had been taught in class. With their own creativity they using mind mapping like we all been taught in Creative Studies. How camera can help you to your social life? As I mention earlier camera produce picture plus now day’s people are crazy about social networking so they will upload picture of their activities via Facebook for example then when people recognize us from picture they will continue communicate with us. It’s that awesome?

Pen, flower and camera are one of the methods that Multimedia University student used to communicate with each other. In our life, sometimes we didn’t rely that things that we’ve been using in our daily days is one of the method to communicate to each other.

(883 words)

and our concept design is "see things in different ways"

Final step

We have to do some moving object for our presentation so we decide to do short video, so this is our group video

"Creative communication" in plain English

and special thanks to my groupmate for the commitment and to Mr Radzi and Mr Halim, trying so hard to make us understand for this project. and yeah this project makes us to see things in different ways =)

Random association

Definition

Random Association is an idea generation method to systematically generate new ideas through a fixed formula. The whole premise of Random Association is to use a Random Word to provoke a reaction from the brain.

Task

and the animal cant be survive if we combine it

and i choose

+

and become

Notes: so the reason we learn about this topic because Mr Radzi and Mr Halim trains us how to think the impossible things can be possible? and i learn something from this activities. yeay!! to me

Juxtaposition

Definition

A placing or being placed in nearness or contiguity, or side by side, often done in order to compare/contrast the two, to show similarities or differences.
There's a little conflict between left brain & right brain when you trying to figure out the similarity & differences between this two object.

Verbal and text analogy can divide in two types:

1) Metaphor

Metaphor compares two unrelated terms, explaining something through elements similar in the other (Ehses and Lupton 1988,9). In this example, the connotations of the glove such as power, punch and hit are transferred to the car, this is helped also by the use of similar colours for both items and the similar size.

2) Similes

A figure of speech in which two fundamentally unlike things are explicitly compared, usually in a phrase introduced by as or like.

eg: her skin is white as snow

Idea of analogy can be category into two too:

LOGICAL ANALOGIES
Logical analogies are analogies, which use similarities in the design, structure or function of to connect back to the subject.

AFFECTIVE ANALOGIES
Affective analogies are the emotional resemblance. The clearest

Task + Exercise

This time, we play some fun game in class. Mr Radzi as to choose Three pair of numbers from 0 - 99

So i choose my birthday : 14 02 87 (^-^)

then i get

1) Flower & Mountain
2) Fly & Rock
3) Oil & Tree

next, create a sentence from word the number i choose earlier

so come out with

1) We can see tiny flower growth on the mountain

2) Bird fly ans stop on top of big rock

3) Palm oil is produce from palm tree

after that, the task getting harder when we have to illustrate from the sentence we create.

And the last step is we have to combine word and the third step
so, this is my result. heeeee~

1) Flower mountain

2) Fly Rock

3) Oil Tree

Mind mapping

Definition

Mortar and pestle is a tool to crash, grind and mix substances.
The pestle is a heavy bat shaped stick whose end is used for pounding and grinding, and the mortal is a bowl, typically made of hard wood, marble, clay or stone. The substance is ground between the pestle and the mortar.

Mind mapping

Mind maps are brainstorming diagrams based on a central idea or image, typically used to aid in organisation, problem solving and decision making. Mind maps use a non-linear graphical form that allows the user to build an intuitive framework around the central idea

and it consist of two types:

Logical mind map
is connected to subject and stereotype

Associated mind map
is opposite to logical mind map which it is not stereotype and away from subject.

Task and Exercise

Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention

Novelty

i goggled the definition and what i got is.. derived from latin word novem for "new" so, novelty is a quality being new and that idea appreciate by a group of person.

I take Twitter for example since now days people are crazy about social networking, twitter a slightly difference from other social networking like myspace, Facebook, tagged.
Twitter is a free social networking service enable its user to send and read messages known as "tweets". Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers knowns as followers.
The person who create this brilliant idea is JACK DORSEY, he also an American software architect and he develop Twitter in 2006. Businessweeks called him one of the technology "best and brightest".

Creativity

best describe as generates new idea or a process of new ways.

4 types of creativity:
  • Aesthetic Organizers
  • Boundary Pushers - take an idea and push it a little further
  • Inventors - Takes existing knowledge and create new ideas
  • The rarest group - Boundary Breakers
Innovation

Some people defined as "Bring a new idea to make change" but my understanding of innovation is creating something out of our current situation for better in future. Innovation can be in 2 categorize :
  • Continuous evolutionary innovations: does not need change human routine eg: wash dishes, shower tab, cloth
  • Dynamic continuous evolutionary innovations: Require some user learning but does not effect human routine. eg: Computer, systems, Drawing.
Invention

define as creating an idea from pre-existing idea. or i defined it as upgrading new things to better idea.

When talking about invention, its reminds what mr. Radzi mention about Thomas Edison - he an inventor, scientist and businessman. He developed many device and influenced life around the world including phonograph, the motion picture camera and also practical electric light bulb.

What is Creativity?

Creativity remains a poorly defined construct within the sciences that study it. Creativity is not easily distinguished from intelligence, wisdom, ingenuity, insight, or intuition, all terms used to describe creative behaviours. Guilford's (1966) distinction between convergent and divergent thinking has perhaps had the most influential effect on how our understanding of creativity has developed. Convergent thinking leads one to arrive at a correct, conventional answer whereas divergent thinking involves generating many novel answers and solutions. Since Guilford, many other components have been included in our understanding of creativity. Here are some creative thinking abilities assembled by Bowd, McDougall, and Yewchuk (1994, pp 150-151):

  • Fluency: The ability to produce many responses to an open-ended question or problem, such as "how many uses can you think of for a paper clip?"
  • Flexibility: The ability to generate ideas that are unconventional, or to view a situation from different perspectives.
  • Originality: The ability to produce unique, unusual, or novel responses, relative to one's reference group.
  • Elaboration: The ability to add rich and elaborate detail to an idea, and to develop and implement it.
  • Visualization: The ability to imagine and mentally manipulate images and ideas, so as to see them from different internal and external perspectives.
  • Transformation: The ability to change one thing or idea into another, to see new meanings, applications, and implications of something already in place.
  • Intuition: The ability to see relationships or make connections based on partial information.
  • Synthesis: The ability to combine parts into a coherent whole.

Criteria of creativity

When i google for criteria of creativity i found this and interesting to describe what i'm looking for.

A Characteristic of the creative personality

  • creative people seems to harbor opposite tendencies on the continuum between extroversion and introversion.
  • creative individuals have a great deal of energy, quites at the rest
  • creative people to to observe thing and alternate between imagination and fantasy at one end and rooted sense of reality at the others.
  • Most creative people are very passionate about their work, and yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
  • The sensitivity of creative individual often exposes them to suffering the pain and yet a great deal of enjoyment.
